The construction of the rail bypass route around Nis, which is part of the project of the modernization and reconstruction of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railroad, on the route of the rail Corridor 10, has begun. It will be 22 kilometers long, and the project encompasses works on the north bypass route around the city of Nis, the construction of a one-track electrified railroad and the electrification of the Crveni Krst-connection with the bypass route (Pantelej) section.

The construction is planned from the Nis-Ranzirna station to the Sicevo station, in the corridor with the Nis-Dimitrovgrad highway. The north rail bypass route around Nis encompasses the construction of a new one-track electrified railroad, which will be equipped for train speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

The company Serbian Railways Infrastructure has signed the agreement on the construction of the bypass route with the company Extra Auto Transport, as the leading member of the consortium.

The value of the agreement is EUR 153.6 million, and the deadline for the execution of the works is 1,035 days.

The general director of Serbian Railways Infrastructure, Jelena Tanaskovic, pointed that, with the construction of the rail bypass route around Nis, the question of the Nis rail hub would be solved and that trains would no longer pass through the city center, as well as that traffic safety would be raised to a higher level.

The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, thanked the EU for the financial help for that project, amounting to 21%.

He pointed out that, once the fast railroad from Belgrade to Nis was built, we would travel much faster to Greece and Turkey:

– It will take an hour and 40 minutes to travel by rail from Belgrade to Nis, and only four and a half hours from Budapest to Nis.
