The gondola which will link Kalemegdan with the New Belgrade park of Usce will be around 1 km long, and the unconventional trip from one part of the city to the other will take around five minutes.

The previous announcements regarding the new means of transportation in Belgrade were confirmed by the Detailed Regulation Plan for the Kalemegdan-Usce gondola, which the City of Belgrade is to put up for early public review from September 13 through 27, 2017. It encompasses an area of 10.7 hectares in the city municipalities of Stari Grad and New Belgrade.

According to the plan, the section of the Kalemegdan station should encompass a part of the footpaths and green areas of the biggest park in Belgrade, and the stop would be located close to the intersection between the Karadjordjeva Street and the Vojvode Bojovica Boulevard. As for the Usce station in New Belgrade, the preliminary border defined by the Plan encompasses parts of the Mihajla Pupina Blvd and the Nikole Tesle Blvd, at the crossing of which the station should be located, next to the skate park.

The starting position in Usce would be located at an altitude of 75 meters, whereas the exit station in Kalemegdan would be located at an altitude of 106 meters. The total length of the route would amount to one kilometer in that case and would be straight all the way through.

The gondola will transport 3,000 passengers per hour in both directions. The plan is for the gondola to have 30 to 35 cabins, which will be able to accommodate between 10 and 35 passengers and will also be adapted for the needs of people with disabilities, as well as for cyclists.

The minimum height of the lower side of the cabin will be 4.5 meters above the ground structures and public traffic routes, six meters above the level of primary infrastructure and 12 meters above the peak water level of the Sava.

The plan envisages the preparation of a preliminary design along with a feasibility study of the gondola route prior to the preparation of urban plans and parceling plans.

Benefits for traffic and tourism

Aside from the gondola's attractiveness, its construction is expected to produce positive effects when it comes to traffic as well, including the improvement in the quality of the existing system of public transportation, a decongestion of the traffic network, enhanced safety and comfort for both pedestrians and cyclists and a reduction in the pollution originating in conventional modes of transportation.

– The implementation of the gondola as an alternative means of transportation will enable the tourism offer of the city throughout the year to increase – it is pointed out in the Plan.

The condition for these effects to be realized is for the existing cultural property at the Kalemegdan Fortress and the natural goods in the parks in Kalemegdan and Usce to be largely preserved and protected in carrying out the plan.

According to announcements by Mayor Sinisa Mali, the works on the gondola from Kalemegdan to Usce should begin in the spring of 2018.

The Detailed Regulation Plan for the Kalemegdan-Usce gondola was prepared by the Institute for Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia for the needs of the investor, the Ski Resorts of Serbia.
