Acceleration of Works on Novi Sad-Subotica Fast Railroad and Completion by End-2024 Announced

It has been agreed with Chinese contractors for the works on the construction of the second section of the Belgrade-Budapest railroad through Serbia, from Novi Sad to Subotica, to be completed before the planned deadline, that is, by the end of 2024, stated the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, while visiting the site.

– There are some problems, but we’re going to step it up now. We should accelerate the works in six months and work at least half as fast as you do in China – Vucic said in Stepanovicevo, where one of the stations along the railroad is to be located.

The Novi Sad-Subotica railroad will be 108.2 kilometers long and feature 49 underpasses, overpasses and similar structures, and trains will run at 200 kilometers per hour on it.

The commercial agreement on the modernization and reconstruction of the rail connection between Serbia and Hungary in the territory of Serbia for the Novi Sad-Subotica-state border near Kelebija section, worth EUR 943 million, was signed in 2018 by Serbian Railways Infrastructure and the consortium of the Chinese companies China Railway International and China Communications Construction Company.

The project is financed from a loan provided by the Chinese Exim Bank.

The first fast railroad, from Belgrade to Novi Sad, where trains run at 200 kilometers per hour, opened to traffic in March.

The construction of the 74.9-km section began at the end of 2017. It cost around 935 million and was financed through Chinese and Russian loans, so companies from those countries, said Chinese consortium and the Russian company RZD International, were also the main contractors.

The plan is for the construction of the Belgrade-Budapest railroad to cost a total of around EUR 4 billion. It is one of the first projects within the Chinese global initiative “Belt & Road”, agreed as a joint project of China, Serbia and Hungary.
