Over 13,000 Work Permits Issued to Foreigners in Serbia So Far This Year – Russians Most Numerous

More than a half of the work permits that have been issued to foreigners in the capital of Serbia since the beginning of the year have been issued to citizens of the Russian Federation, and they work in the IT sector.

According to the data of the Belgrade branch of the National Employment Service, from January 1 through April 18, of the total of 7,797 issued permits, 4,224 were issued to Russians and 74 were issued to Ukrainians. They are followed by citizens of China, India and Turkey.

According to the National Employment Service – Belgrade branch, aside from the IT sector, most foreigners are seeking work permits for jobs as construction workers or their assistants, rebar fixers, carpenters, for jobs in hospitality and other service activities.

A foreign citizen can get employed in Serbia if they have a visa for a longer stay based on employment, a temporary stay permit, or a permanent stay permit and a work permit.

– An employer submits a request for mediation in employment for a concrete job to the National Employment Service 60 days at the earliest and 10 days at the latest before the date of the submission of the request for the issuing of a work permit for employment. In exceptional cases, when it is in the state’s interest, or when internationally taken obligations call for it, the labor minister can set a deadline period shorter than 10 days for the submission of a need-for-employment application. In that case, the employer is obliged to submit their consent – the National Employment Service explains.
