The Natural History Museum in Belgrade will get a new, special purpose building, which will be built in the space of the Friendship Park complex in New Belgrade, the Ministry of Culture announced.

The new museum building in the Friendship Park will also be a big step toward the realization of the idea about the forming of a museum quarter in the capital city, which will give an important boost to the development of cultural events and museum life, according to the website of the Government of Serbia.

As pointed out, this space, along with the Memorial Center “Staro Sajmiste” complex, is envisaged as a future culture quarter in several positively rated studies, where the construction of the National Concert Hall, a theater and a cinema is planned and where the Museum of Contemporary Art is already located and where numerous outdoor cultural events are held.

For the accommodation, normal work and full protection and preservation of the museum collections of the Natural History Museum, a space of close to 15,000 square meters on three levels is planned, of which several thousand square meters for exhibition halls.

With the construction of the special-purpose building, whose size, structure and equipment will meet the modern international standards and criteria, the Natural History Museum will get the necessary conditions for the accommodation of the collections and their permanent keeping, as well as for the implementation of modern techniques and technologies of preserving and working on the items.

As added, the new building will also mean that the public can finally see natural cultural goods from the museum depots, whereas the possibility of an adequate realization of the cultural, exhibition, education and scientific activities will contribute to making the Natural History Museum one of the most attractive cultural centers in Serbia.

The Natural History Museum in Belgrade was founded in 1895. It is one of the oldest Serbian cultural institutions and the only museum of its kind in Serbia. The richness and variety of its collections makes it the biggest natural history museum in Southeast Europe.

Today, 128 after its founding, the Natural History Museum is still in its temporary accommodation, without a permanent exhibit that would present, in one place, the vast natural and cultural heritage of Serbia, collected and preserved for decades.
