The “Vojvodina Smile” is one of the names of the future traffic route which will connect the east and west parts of the Province, as well as the neighboring countries Romania and Hungary and, at the same time, be part of pan-European corridors. In five years, we should be able to use this route, and the value of the works has been estimated at EUR 1.5 billion.

The traffic infrastructure in Vojvodina was slow to follow the needs and the development of this region, and the new traffic route will fix that, especially in a part of Banat. The new section from the Backi Breg border crossing with Hungary, through Sombor, Kula, Vrbas, Becej, Novi Becej and Kikinda will end with two branches with the neighboring Romania, near Nakovo and Srpska Crnja.

– The construction project and the permit for the first section are finished. The road itself is split into eight sections, which amounts to a length of around 20 km from Backi Breg to Sombor – Nemanja Erceg, the provincial secretariat for urban planning and environmental protection, stated for RTV.

The new corridor, 175 km long, will have four lanes 3.5 meters wide each, and the fact that, on the first section alone, nine overpasses and seven bridges will be built over several water flows and farm roads, illustrates how demanding the works are. In addition to improved connectivity and increased traffic safety, this section, in addition to its national importance, also has international importance, because it will connect three pan-European corridors, says professor Vuk Bogdanovic of the Faculty of Technical Sciences, Department of Traffic Engineering, in Novi Sad.

– The corridor which starts in Budapest and then goes down through Svilaj, Sarajevo, Mostar, to the Port of Ploce and the Budapest-Novi Sad-Belgrade branch of Corridor 10 and Corridor 4, which goes from Budapest through Timisoara, Sofia, to Istanbul – confirmed Bogdanovic.

The value of the project is EUR 1.5 billion, and according to the announcements, the corridor named “Vojvodina Smile” should be completed in five years.
