Facilities for Housing of Animals to Be Built Within Complex Rakovica Selo BIO 4 – Looking for Designers

The Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovations has opened the public call for the preparation of the project-technical documentation and the construction of facilities for the housing of animals within BIO 4 Campus and the Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera “Torlak” in the complex Rakovica Selo BIO 4.

This is the first phase of the works, which, among other things, entails: a facility of 2,400 m2 for laboratory animals, a horse stable, a sheep pen and a parking lot with 25 spaces. A gate, a guardhouse, silos, a cooling plant for condemned viscera, a hay barn, a manure lagoon, paddocks for horses and rams and a substation are also to be built.

Facility for laboratory animals

The building is supposed to be built from solid materials on three levels. The ground floor and the first upper floor will house laboratory animals, the second upper floor will feature the space for the employees, containing offices, locker rooms, a sanitary block with a shower stall and other accompanying rooms, as well as a part of the infrastructure with all the technical norms (connections for water, electricity, heating and cooling system, sewer outlet, phone and internet and a network for the connecting of video surveillance).

Horse stable

The facility for the accommodation of horses should provide a space whose capacity will enable the accommodation of up to 10 horses, the work of the employees at the stable and the provision of healthcare to the animals.

It consists of two separate stables – one with 10 boxes for the accommodation of horses, the other with three boxes for quarantine, and there are also the box for the isolation of horses, the box for the preparation of horses for the process of plasmapheresis, laboratories and a room for the process of plasmapheresis, a makeshift warehouse and an entrance space, as well as a cold room for the storage of raw materials and finished products.

The stable facility should be planned in the part of the complex near and up to the paddock itself. It needs to be on one level, under one roof, on two waters, with a gross total area of around 470 m2. A hallway 3 meters wide should be planned through the middle of the facility.

Sheep pen

The structure for the housing of rams should provide a space whose capacity will enable the housing of up to 20 rams, a space for isolation, a laboratory for the taking of blood, the work of the employees at the stable and the provision of healthcare to the animals.

It should be planned in the part of the complex near the paddock, also on one level, under one roof, on two waters.

The total area of the complex Rakovica Selo BIO 4 is around 7.6 ha.

The complex is supposed to have two separate entrances, namely:

– the main entrance, with a special part for pedestrians, and an entrance with a vehicle barrier;

– technical-economic entrance for the delivery of animal feed, the taking out of condemned viscera and other secondary raw materials.

The main entrance and the technical-economic entrance need to be secured by a metal gate.

The complex has to have pedestrian and vehicle access routes, which will be clearly defined, delineated and without mutual crossing.

In the second phase, the facility for the accommodation of mini pigs and a stable for rabbits, as well as the floorings, are to be built.

In order to obtain the building permit, the preliminary design, approval planning, main design and the as-built design need to be prepared.

According to the documentation, the construction of said facilities should be in line with the European standards and the legislations which regulate the growing and housing of laboratory and experimental animals, health protection and well-being of animals, the protection of the working and living environment, the securing of rational consumption and the maximum saving of resources.
