For years now, there have been announcements of the development of the dilapidated plaza in front of the Church of Saint Sava, as well as the construction of an underground garage in Skerliceva Street, but they have also been postponed for years. That the time has come for these projects to be carried out is claimed by the president of the Temporary Organ of the City of Belgrade, Aleksandar Sapic, who pointed out that they would be realized in the next year and that Belgrade would get a space matching the beauty and importance of the church itself.

– The process of agreeing on what the plaza should look like so that it is in line with the architecture, beauty and importance of this gorgeous church, but also the needs of our citizens, has lasted for the past two to three years. We have harmonized our positions with the Serbian Orthodox Church about it and we are finally ready to go into the final phase, according to the project of the academy member Branislav Mitrovic and professor Dejan Miljkovic. We expect the works to begin in 2024 and for the plaza in front of the Church of Saint Sava to truly become a symbol of this part of Europe, just like the church itself has become much more than that – Sapic said.

Mitrovic and Miljkovic, as the Politika daily wrote earlier, got the job without a public architectural contest. The Serbian Orthodox Church directly hired them to develop the space in front of the Church of Saint Sava. According to their preliminary design, on the left side of the plaza, opposite the building of the National Library of Serbia, there will be a forest with a playground for children, and between it and the library, there will be the central pedestrian lane. The existing fountain, as planned, will be removed, and the new one will not be of the traditional type. Furthermore, the construction of the Patriarchate building in the extension of the existing Parish Home, is planned. One part of the plaza, the round one, the closest to the church, was paved with tiles not so long ago.
When it comes to the garage, Sapic pointed out that it was an integral part of this whole big project.
– Primarily because there is a great need for parking in this part of the city, and when we develop this plaza the way it is supposed to look, of course, much more people will be able to spend their time here. This garage will have around 370 spaces, the location requirements have been obtained, the completion of the preparation of the project documentation is in progress and we expect to begin its construction next year. Not long after the completion of the plaza in front of the Church of Saint Sava, the garage should be completed as well, and with the realization of these two projects, we will essentially give this part of the city a whole new look – Sapic said.
The head urban planner of the City of Belgrade, Marko Stojcic, emphasized that “the professors who did this project have very carefully designed this whole space in close cooperation with the Serbian patriarch and bishop Stefan and reached an agreement for the space to feature a large green surface.”

– It should match the National Library and it should be a large public space for various events to be organized by the church and the city. Finally, this space will be the center of Vracar and one of the centers of Belgrade, and the people who come here will be able to feel in harmony with what this church represents – the most important facility of our faith and culture – Stojcic said.
