The completion of the works on the facility for the desulfuring of flue gases at the Thermal Power Plant Nikola Tesla B (TENT B) is planned for the first half of next year. This facility will enable a reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions of nearly 30 times, which will contribute significantly to the improvement of air quality and harmonization with the EU and Serbian environmental standards. The project is worth EUR 220 million and, upon its completion, more than 90% of the thermal power plants within the Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) system will be ecologically acceptable, announced the Government of Serbia.

The site has been visited by the minister of mining and energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic and the CEO of EPS, Dusan Zivkovic.

At the construction site, as announced, there are currently 330 workers, and the number is expected to increase so that the works would be completed within the planned deadline. It is significant that a similar facility was successfully completed at TENT A earlier this year, contributing to improved air quality in Obrenovac and Belgrade.

Within the environmental projects, the construction of the waste water treatment plant at TENT B is also being brought to a close, which additionally shows dedication to environmental protection. The desulfuring project is being realized in cooperation with the Japanese partner Mitsubishi Power, whose experience contributes to the process of the decarbonization of the energy sector in Serbia.

Upon the completion of this project, sulfur dioxide emissions will be reduced to below 130 milligrams per cubic meter, and the emissions of powdered matters will be reduced to below 20 milligrams per cubic meter. Gypsum will be used as a byproduct, and an annual production of around 300,000 tons of this material, which has a wide application in the construction industry, is expected.
