The environmental and economic benefits are considerable, because the re-use of scraped asphalts, of which there are large quantities at Serbia’s landfills, will contribute to saving on the excavation of natural rock, whose exploitation endangers surface and ground waters and harms the biodiversity. Scraped asphalt consists of as much as 97% rock and can be re-used in the production of new asphalt, says Sinisa Mitrovic, the head of the Center for Circular Economy of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia (CCIS).
– The recycling of scraped asphalt is a business opportunity for our road building companies, because, with the processes of asphalt recycling, we expect investments of nearly EUR 10 million in the equipment – emphasizes Mitrovic. He adds that, with a network of 44,000 kilometers of roads in rural area, as well as roads along the gas pipelines, wind farms and protected natural goods, the application of a cold recycling of asphalt will eliminate the harmful vapors, whereas the state budget savings will be huge and are estimated at EUR 100 million annually at least, the CCIS announces.
