The Labor Law allows parents to spend the first school days with children, but whether that right can be exercised is also down to the employers.

The Labor Law envisages the right to a paid leave for parents of first-grade children and children who are attending preschool institutions for the first time.

The first two school days are free and there is a special procedure for that.

Employees in private companies also have that right, but only if it is envisaged by the company’s collective agreement.

If not, the employees have to count on the employer’s understanding, clarifies the honorary member of the Serbian Association of Employers Nebojsa Atanackovic.

– I’m not sure that the Labor Law envisages things in such detail, it is global in nature – says Atanackovic.

He clarifies that a large number of things are not applicable in all cases and that it would be good for it to be down to the good relations between the employer and the employee.
